Parametric Architecture
Updated: May 5, 2022
Parametric design is shapes and forms that have a curving nature, often similar to a parabola or other flowing forms in the shape of arcs.
Parametric architecture involves highly complex formulae that cannot be managed by the human mind alone; complex parametric equations are handled by computer algorithm programming techniques to produce the required formation.
Advantage of parametric modeling: when setting up a 3D geometric model, the shape of model geometry can be changed as soon as the parameters such as the dimensions or curvatures are modified; therefore there is no need to redraw the model whenever it needs a change.
Disadvantage: Addition of features can take a lot of energy and time for the computer to process. Parametric 3D modeling can become heavy-handed during concept design, especially when designers are still exploring ideas.
So far I still haven't got the chance to do any parametric architecture. All I experienced in my part 1 practical are conventional building system. As an architects, we really need more exploration and more technical knowledge on different types of advanced building technology.
